Reader’s Question:

Hi! I have a problem with my new car. The other day, the parking lot where I live was flooded (I’m in Berwyn, Illinois by the way). Unfortunately, my car, which was parked there, retained water from this flood. I wonder if I could be covered for this.

Hello, Imee of Berwyn, IL! Have you already discussed this issue with your car insurance agent? I think he or she can be a lot of help to you. Or you can simply go over the details of your auto insurance policy yourself. Go check if your car has comprehensive coverage. If it has, then let your car insurance company deal with the details of having your car repaired. You just report the issue to the auto insurance company, and everything will be arranged. Stolen cars and those damaged by flood, fire or animals, or any other physical damages caused by something other than collision are covered by comprehensive auto insurance. Well, based on your description of the situation, the way your car was damaged, it would appear that you certainly qualify for coverage, provided you have liability insurance. You just make sure your insurance policy includes liability insurance; otherwise, the damage to your car will not qualify to be covered by your auto insurance policy.

So, check the details of your coverage, inform the insurance company, and discuss this with the claims adjuster that they’re going to send. If things happened the way you mentioned it, then all will be well.
